4G Networks
Already we have glimpsed what we might expect from 4G, but despite the hype it could still be some time before LTE (Long Term Evolution) is fully available in the UK. LTE is considered generally to be the best wireless network standard for 4G, but due to a number of problems related to both technology and regulatory authorities, implementation of it could be significantly delayed. If the UK fails to establish a viable LTE network, then it will be necessary to fall back to a second best implementation of 4G which will leave us lagging behind our continental European counterparts.
The first demonstration of LTE was on a prototype Samsung Netbook that had been constructed using a LTE chipset that had been developed by Samsung. When unveiling it the company issued a statement claiming that the technology will provide mobile high speed, low latency and ubiquitous connectivity irrespective of location.
When on the move connection speeds are likely to be 50-100Mbps which is faster than most optical cable connections. Samsung added that LTE will be used for data transfer and that 3G networks would be freed up for other traffic.
The problem with rolling out LTE in the UK is the lack of infrastructure, and Samsung does not expect that it will be developed until at least 2012. Its new phones will be enabled with LTE architectures, but they are also planning on incorporating WiMAX technology. WiMAX is considered to be the next best thing to LTE.
In terms of network providers, O2 is carrying out trials on both WiMAX and LTE in order to decide which the best is. LTE has already been demonstrated by Telefónica, the company that owns O2, and they have stated that LTE should be the way to go.
Whilst WiMax can be implemented in the short term it seems that it is a compromise technology. It seems that the problem with rolling out LTE is related to the government. In order to use LTE a larger spectrum is needed and so far the regulators are not responding to requests to provide a more equitable spectrum distribution.
Meanwhile, 4G is being rolled out in Scandinavia where 4G city networks are being set up in Stockholm and Oslo. See 4G technology in action on the new i phone 4, now available at phones4u .
